but from the top of my head (and there’s a lot more examples than what i’m thinking of), there’s:

> the first time we are even introduced to rei, and she’s not only cinematically framed as the writhing object of pain for shinji’s consumption, but narrative-wise she’s contorted into a tool by gendo to manipulate shinji

> asuka’s injured body masturbated to in hospital by shinji

> not even only fear like i pointed out in the first post, but contempt (a plug: here’s an incredible post about contempt in eva). shinji during instrumentality is made to watch misato (+ kaji) have sex. contextually, sex is used by misato as a mechanism for self-harm, and this scene frames shinji’s response as the most significant trajectory from which to experience misato’s life

there’s also every single death of the women, girls, + girl-aligned major characters in evangelion. cases:

> ritsuko, literally killed by gendo

> rei ii’s suicide/death, followed by a close-up shot of shinji’s face

> misato being shot while protecting shinji, leaving him with the cross necklace, and dying, followed by a close-up shot of shinji’s face

> asuka’s horrifying death by evangelion vultures, followed by a close-up shot of shinji’s face

> rei-lilith’s godlike undead body, followed by a close-up shot of shinji’s face
